Food Review: Walter’s West Dulwich

It’s always a special evening when you’re invited to the opening of a restaurant in #southeastlondon hood #westdulwich @waltersdulwich is the new neighbourhood eatery and bar, named after Walter Hathaway, the master milliner and costumier who first occupied the site.

Walter’s is invitingly local, with a focus on the best of British produce, fine wine (cellar/private dining downstairs) and awesome 🍸 cocktails. The vibe is cool, with an air of easiness to the sophistication and is perfectly non pretentious. Decor is bright, simple, contemporary. The menu and pricing is accessible. Atmosphere – smart yet casual and there’s a good honest confident quality to the food.

What Walter’s offers is subtle – they know they’re good – and there’s something to be said about not shouting that from the roof tops. I had a chat with the founders Rob Hampton and Matt Lovell, the pair behind Covent Garden’s The Oystermen. We talked about how this new venture never strays far from their core belief in good value and excellent hospitality, but more importantly they shared their favourite menu dishes so we followed suit.

My dining partner and I dived into the menu. For the initial ’snack’ we enjoyed the soft, smooth, lightweight Smoked Cod Roe, Trout Skin, Espelette teamed with the perfectly crisped versus enjoyably creamy Truffle and Mushroom Arancini. For starter the Bloody Mary Jelly Crab Salad with Cucumber & Kalamansi dressing was a texturful, colourful, fresh option enjoyed with the warm smoky delight of the Tempura and Roasted Cauliflower – light, cooked to perfection with dollops of curry sauce and Lime Labneh (my favourite!). For mains we tucked into the 8hr Braised Ox Cheek and Hickory Smoked Mash – tender, flavourful and cooked to perfection while the Roasted Lamb Rump and Cennellini Bean Ragout was enjoyed pink, this dish offered a warm autumnal density.

All washed down with a delicious, full bodied Domaine De Lanoblaie. A Cabernet Franc, aromatic dark berry aromas with a palate of subtle pepper and spice and a chalky mineral character.

Big shout out to Rob, Matt, Jacob &Loris for being super hosts and sharing your passion. We wish you tremendous luck. #suportlocal #review
