Theatre Peckham puts student’s mental health centre stage

Following the 2021 new year government announcement to stay home, Theatre Peckham has launched a world-class creative learning programme online to support the well-being and mental health of young people.

A recent Ofsted report stated, ‘repeated isolation has chipped away at progress pupils have made… and had a negative impact on many children’s well-being.’

Theatre Peckham’s programme will deliver 28 creative classes online including Music Production, Street Dancing, Spoken Word and Acting all led by professional tutors, many of whom are freelancers hardest hit by the pandemic.

The term also launches an exciting new collaboration with English Touring Opera, presenting Rap X Gilbert and Sullivan, which will introduce young people to the artform of opera and its similarities with the formation of rap. These sessions will be led by rapper John Akinde and Opera Singer Themba Mvula and are completely free.

Theatre Peckham’s Artistic Director and CEO Suzann McLean said: “After what has been a very challenging year, we have seen the impact of the pandemic on young people’s mental health and we know the arts are great at supporting them in this.

“Throughout the past year, we have continued to deliver our creative programme to our young people and will continue to do so going into 2021. It’s vital that we keep the arts alive for children and even though our physical doors may be closed, our digital home remains open. Our focus and drive to continue delivering and supporting the ambitions of children and young people enables us to support them during an uncertain time.”

Theatre Peckham is also offering a number of financial bursaries to support young people whose families may have been affected financially by the pandemic, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to take part creatively.

Theatre Peckham is an award-winning cultural venue for social change and artistic excellence founded in 1986. Through the power of theatre, we illuminate young voices, provide skills and opportunities, and platform excellent creatives by producing new writing and performance focusing on young, culturally diverse talent.
