As autumn draws in, some of us look forward to a hearty home cooked meal on a Sunday and others like to be fed and watered in local independent food holes, well last Sunday we chose the latter and went for dinner at Sicilian Art. Opened in May 2015, Sicilian Art has featured in some London food blogs as one of the best pizzerias in South London so we wanted to try it out for ourselves.
This cosy pizzeria situated near Kent house and Penge is run by Giulian who has been making pizzas since he was 16, so he knows a thing or two about the circular delicious dish. With his 15 years experience in the food industry this place has a wealthy menu of tasty Italian morsels made from the best ingredients with their own unique techniques, and a tasty wine menu to boot.
Steve and I chose the Stuffed Mushrooms and the Bufaline al Forno for starters, and what a good choice! I’ve never tasted stuffed mushrooms like it; fine bread crumbs, creamy butter and garlic flavours presented with a fabulously large mushroom with just the right amount of mascarpone cheese, parsley, parmesan cheese, walnuts and cream. YUM! The tasty Buffalo mozzarella was served in a delicious creamy and warm herby fresh tomato sauce, with a side serving of homemade crispbread.
For the main course I enjoyed the vegetarian lasagne and Steve chose the Calzone al Furno. The lasagne was packed with freshly cooked vegetables and more cheese, I only managed to get through half. Steve enjoyed the calzone, but found it very bready in parts. To wash it down, we dived into a robust and full-bodied Montepulaciano ‘5 Senses’ a full soft black cherry flavoured wine with damson fruit aromas.
Sicilian Art is the perfect spot for a romantic meal for two or a catch up with friends and family and there is a bit of that ‘I feel like I’m on holiday vibe’ when you are there. The restaurant is welcoming and cosy with an open view of the kitchen, feel free to watch your pizza in the making and be sure to check out the massive parmesan cheese in the fridge.
Is it the best pizzeria in South London, I can’t answer that question yet, the quest has only just begun, but it is definitely up there!
