241 coffee flyer front

Launched 12 May 2012, by founder and entrepreneur Brook Anderson, Dee Dee’s Jazz and the Funk is on the hill in Herne Hill, South East London.

As soon as you walk through the front door of Dee Dee’s, you are greeted by an intimate, slick, jazz vibe.  We do not favour any bar over the next, but we will say that Dee Dee’s is one of South London’s jazz gems.  The interior is decorated in smoky colours, the walls adorned with pictures of famous jazz and blues musicians and comfortable seating is available.  Inside, at the front of the bar, there is a seating area that doubles up as a stage for musicians who perform at the live music nights.  There is also an outdoor patio area which houses various heaters, so customers can enjoy this space all year round.

We walked through to the back of the bar to a ‘sit up’ section which faces an impressive drinks selection.  Dee Dee’s manager, Elijah, informed us that they stock 7 champagnes, a limited edition Jack Daniels, Sinatra Selection – originally made for Frank Sinatra in the late 1960’s – and White Dog Whiskey, a colorless un-aged rye whiskey developed for the first time since the Prohibition Era.  Other spirits in residence include Justin Timberlake’s tequila brand 901.  In total, an impressive 78 whiskies, 58 vodkas, 9 brandies and 26 rums.  The team told us that they are working to win the Time Out award for best stocked bar in South London.  Check out the whiskies and bourbon menu here.

Dee Dee’s is passionate about responsible drinking and values their customers, many of who have now become ‘friends of the bar’.  Once a month, drink tasting events are held, from Rum to Champagne tastings, be sure to check out the website for up-coming events.  The next event is a Champagne tasting, 25 September 2013.

Dee Dee’s host regular themed nights, fancy dress, parties, live music nights as well as parties for customers.  The venue is always dressed to impress and the staff are willing to cater to your needs.

Food, coffee’s and free Wi-Fi are available all day.  Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 5-8pm is “Happy Hour” which offers beers and cocktails at a special rate.

Food Presentation:

Good. Decent sized servings
, good flavours and a variety of textures.
Very fresh.  Simple, yet delicious.

We Ordered:

Hummus, grilled pitta bread  and Halloumi salad.   The pitta bread was freshly grilled and a perfect accompaniment to Hummus.  The salad was a mixed selection of lettuce, green and black olives, red pepper, tomato and grilled aubergine, all sprinkled with a sweet soulful salad dressing.  Tasty.  Our only comment refers to personal taste, that there was an abundance of salad dressing and olives.

The in-house team prepare the food.

Food source and seasonality:

Meat from butchers in Holland Park, vegetables from market stall on Edgware Road, bread and similar product from Ye Old Bakery, Herne Hill.

Dee Dee’s is looking to extend the vegetarian menu options and the seasonality of dishes on offer.

Wine is served by the glass and bottle.  Each glass of wine costs the same price.  This is to encourage customers to try new wines and to choose by palette not price.

All wines are new world.

Jazz, funk, soul, reggae, latin.  Dee Dee’s holds regular music themed nights, open mic events and more.
