Why not head down to the Half Moon Herne Hill (@halfmoonherne) this Saturday to enjoy a drink or two, delicious food and a free film showing that may make you quiver in your seat?
The Herne Hill Film Festival with http://www.freefilmfestivals.org is screening the British Premiere of ‘The Night of the Taranta and Surroundings (La Notte Della Taranta e Dintorni) , a documentary celebrating the vibrant folk traditions of Puglia in Italy, at the Half Moon pub on Saturday May 11, from 8pm’.
The Night of the Taranta
‘In the tiny region of Grecìa Salentina in southern Puglia, a folk dance first created by women working in tobacco fields as a response to the bite of the tarantula is now celebrated in the form of ‘The night of the Taranta’, a music festival culminating in a concert in front of a 100,000-strong crowd. The Salento musical tradition of the pizzica-pizzica and the sound of the taranta, plus the Girka language and culture, the traditions of eastern European and Mediterranean countries are portrayed here along with the finale in the city of Melpignano. The documentary is a tale of the different musical experiences, together with various concerts mixed with the rehearsal of the final concert led by Pietro Milesi.’
